These are not decisions that any of us want to be taking, but unfortunately, we must make them to secure UEA&rsquo;s long-term future. We have now concluded our collective Trade Union consultation phase about the overall proposals and move to the next phase, which is individual consultations with staff in impacted areas.
&ldquo;Staff have been informed that the proposals include a goal for reduction of 163 full time equivalent roles across the University which we hope will be achieved through a voluntary redundancy programme targeted at a minority of selected areas across the University. Compulsory redundancies will always be a last resort.

Prof David Maguire, UEA Vice-Chancellor, said: &ldquo;Our staff have been informed that although our long-term finances remain sound, we need to identify an additional &pound;11m of savings from expenditure of around &pound;350m to stay on track with our financial sustainability plan. This has arisen because of inflationary cost pressures and reduction in international postgraduate numbers.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Our student recruitment numbers reflect the typical sector-wide drop in postgraduate taught international students resulting from the last Government&rsquo;s immigration changes, negative rhetoric and threat to the Graduate Employment Route. &nbsp;
&ldquo;The financial impact of this drop in international students means we cannot rule out redundancies. I stress that compulsory redundancies will always be a last resort. &nbsp;
&ldquo;I recognise that this will be unsettling news for the UEA community. I have assured our staff that we will continue to provide clarity on progress and timelines, and staff will be given more information on provisional plans by early November. We will seek to mitigate the impact of any measures we need to take, and any reductions will be made in a targeted way, driven by data, to protect as much of our community as possible. &nbsp;
&ldquo;We have been open about the significant challenges being faced across the sector with the erosion of the value of undergraduate tuition fees, fees, which are now worth around &pound;3,500 less per student in real terms than when they were introduced. The Office for Students cites that 40% of universities were in deficit last year and that is estimated to rise to 80% by 2027. &nbsp;
&ldquo;We have already worked to make savings in areas where no significant impact will be felt on our university. Though the scale of the challenge is significant, we are one year into our three-year savings plan and we are confident that we will remain on track.&rdquo; &nbsp;

UEA graduation is a non profit making event. A charge for guest tickets has been introduced for this year to support some of the running costs and to ensure that we can continue to provide an event of this standard on campus.
Students do not need to pay for a ticket to attend their ceremony. Whole event guest tickets, costing &pound;20, include entry to the ceremony hall and the festival zone, including live music to celebrate after the ceremony. A limited number of &pound;10 tickets will also be available, giving access to the festival zone, a live screening of the ceremony and live music.&nbsp;
Charging for guests to attend graduation ceremonies is standard practice in many universities and we believe that our ceremony, with festival zone and live music, offers value for money and an excellent celebration for our students and their guests.
As in previous years, students are guaranteed three guest tickets. Additional tickets may be released by ballot later in the spring if they are available.

The UEA campus was recently defaced with anti-Semitic graffiti and we are working with the police to identify those responsible. The comments made do not reflect the views of the University and do not meet our values. Arrangements have been made to remove the graffiti as quickly as possible and support is being offered to students distressed by it.

A: Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) is a type of lightweight &ldquo;bubbly&rdquo; concrete made of cement, lime, water and an aeration agent, which was used in buildings constructed between the 1950s and 1990s. The aeration technique reduces the weight of the concrete, making it a popular choice for building materials such as lightweight roof planks. In the UK, the manufacture and use of RAAC ceased during the 1990s. &nbsp;
<h2> Q. Is there RAAC in buildings on campus and what is being done about it?&nbsp;</h2>
A: Many University buildings were constructed between the 1950s and the 1990s, which was a time when RAAC was commonly used. The Ziggurats, Nelson Court and Constable Terrace have RAAC panels in some areas of their roofs. In line with Government guidance, spaces that are known to have RAAC have been vacated and will remain closed to allow further investigations and remedial works to be carried out.  A desktop survey of University buildings is now complete and it has not identified other areas which are likely to have RAAC. Further assessments and surveys are being carried out to ensure that buildings remain safe for students, staff and visitors.  &nbsp;
<h2> Q. Why is RAAC considered a safety risk?&nbsp;</h2>
A: It is now known that the structural integrity of RAAC concrete can be compromised over time, particularly if the material becomes saturated with water or is exposed to adverse or changing structural loads. It is now known that the material can suffer from sudden deterioration that may not be detectable by a visual inspection alone, which has prompted the UK Government to update advice on the management of RAAC in buildings.   &nbsp;
<h2> Q. Why are we only now finding out about RAAC in UEA buildings?&nbsp;</h2>
A. The UK Government issued new advice on the 31 August advising that spaces with RAAC should be vacated whilst mitigations are put into place to assess the material and protect it from damage. In line with this guidance, the University has vacated the spaces where RAAC has been identified and is arranging for further investigations to be carried out by structural engineers.&nbsp; &nbsp; We have communicated directly with the students who are directly affected and we are working hard to minimise the impact on your student experience. <h2>Q: How long are repair works likely to take, and will I be in alternative accommodation for the whole academic year?&nbsp;</h2>
A: All affected buildings are closed until further notice. We will provide updates on timescales as soon as we are able. &nbsp;
<h2>Q: How do I know if I'm being allocated alternative accommodation?</h2>
A: All affected students have now received emails from UEA Accommodation Office. If you have not received an email from the Accommodation Office&nbsp;by Monday 11 September, you will not be affected, and there will be no change to your accommodation when you arrive with us.&nbsp;

<h2>Q: Will I be financially impacted if I have had to move to alternative accommodation?&nbsp;</h2>
There will be no financial impact on any student as a result of any change to their planned accommodation, with all reallocated room facilities being either equivalent to or an upgrade on initial accommodation. All students relocated off campus at St Crispin&rsquo;s Gate have received the offer of a free bus pass or a voucher to purchase a bicycle. &nbsp;

Students will be moved from Norfolk and Suffolk Terrace (the Ziggurats) and they will be closed while further investigations are carried out. They will remain closed until further notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Visitor accommodation in Broadview Lodge, and the top floors of Nelson Court and Constable Terrace, have been closed for further investigations.&nbsp;&nbsp;
We do not believe that any other UEA residential or non-residential buildings are affected.&nbsp;
Around 750 student rooms will be impacted. Any affected students will be allocated alternative on campus or city centre accommodation. Students affected will receive communications directly in the early part of next week.&nbsp;
UEA&rsquo;s risk profile and approach to occupied buildings has been amended in line with new guidelines from the Department for Education.&nbsp;
University of East Anglia Vice-Chancellor Prof David Maguire said: &ldquo;The safety of our students, staff and visitors is paramount.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;Following risk assessment and due diligence work, we have identified spaces with RAAC. Therefore, in line with new Government guidance, we are closing some spaces and relocating students. The affected spaces will remain closed until we can be certain that they are safe.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We realise that this could be a stressful time for both the students being moved and those due to arrive and return to campus in the coming weeks. We will be communicating with them directly over the coming days so that they&rsquo;re aware of the alternative accommodation and to make sure they have everything they need to settle into life here at UEA. There will be no additional costs to students as a result of any changes.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Additional support will be offered to all students who need it and we will share further information when it is available.&rdquo;&nbsp;

A team of scientists from the Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is calling into question some of the findings relating to machine learning in the highly cited&nbsp;2020 Nature paper, &lsquo;Microbiome analyses of blood and tissues suggest cancer diagnostic approach&rsquo;.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Led by Dr Abraham Gihawi and Prof Daniel Brewer of the Norwich Medical School, the team reanalysed work by another group claiming that microbial DNA found in blood and tissue has a near-perfect ability to identify where in the body a cancer is located. &nbsp;&nbsp;
The UEA researchers&nbsp;found that many of the bacteria reported in the original study were identified incorrectly and that errors in machine learning practices lead to tests performing much better than they would have done otherwise. &nbsp;&nbsp;
This impacts many of the studies and findings that have cited this work and raises issues regarding the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence more generally. &nbsp;
There needs to be a more thorough investigation into the role that microbes play in cancer in ongoing research.
