Spiking - joint statement from UEA and uea(su)

We are aware of increasing concerns around spiking both locally and nationally, and both UEA and uea(su) are taking this very seriously. We want students to feel as safe as possible on nights out and on our campus, and are working together to help ease concerns around spiking and prevent this dangerous activity.

We would like to reiterate that spiking via any means is dangerous and completely unacceptable. Anyone found spiking on campus will be removed and banned from the LCR permanently, will be referred to the police for potential criminal sanction and be subject to University disciplinary action.

Both the University and Students’ Union are taking a number of measures to prevent spiking in venues on campus. Searches have increased upon entry to venues, all bags are being searched, all unattended drinks are being disposed of quickly and glass covers for drinks are being brought in along with the anti-spiking bottle toppers already available. We both meet regularly with the police to discuss safety on campus and are continuing to discuss measures around spiking with them. Campus and venue security staff are trained to recognise the effects of spiking and are all first aid trained to be able to provide immediate assistance.

We would also like to reassure students that all reports of spiking will be fully investigated and support will be provided. If students believe they or someone they know have been spiked, they should report it to a member of venues staff immediately – uea(su) has first aiders and an Alcohol Impact Team available at their club nights and gigs. Students can also report incidents to the University via UEA Security or through the Report and Support online tool, where they can also request support from an adviser. We would also encourage students to report incidents to the police.
