In the UK, the performance of train services has been declining in recent years.
To help the rail industry, the Rail Safety and Standard Board (RSSB), via the Rail Research UK Association (RRUKA), launched a big data sandbox competition in October 2017 on developing novel ideas and innovative solutions to improve rail network performance.
A team from the University of East Anglia (UEA), with Dr. Wenjia Wang as the principal investigator (PI), collaborating with Greater Anglia (GA) and Network Rail (NR), won the competition. We were awarded a research grant to carry out a feasibility study on developing an intelligence ensemble system for predicting and preventing train delays.
Our intelligence ensemble system consists of four key functional modules: the data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL) pipeline (and database), Delay Explorer, Delay Predictor, and Delay Preventer.
