We teach and research in a wide arena of Environmental Earth Sciences including geohazards, geophysics, sedimentology, land-ocean interaction, hydrogeology and hydrology, volcanology, geochemistry, palaeoclimatology and palaeoceanography.
Our Geoscientists study the Earth, the resources it brings and the record it contains of past climate and tectonics. As well as studying geological events we are interested in current solid Earth and geomorphic processes with special focus on geohazards such as landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes and sediment-charged flash floods, and the interaction between humans, the Earth’s oceans, weather and climate systems. We have particular strength in the management of soils, rivers and groundwater resources.
As a fundamentally field-driven discipline we pursue this research across the globe from Peru and Hawaii to Norfolk. We have cutting-edge laboratory and field equipment, including a world class stable isotope laboratory, chemical analytical facilities, and a sedimentary fluid dynamics laboratory.
Our overall aim is to quantify, understand and predict natural processes and their products. We achieve this by wide collaboration with other scientists in the School of Environmental Sciences, Higher Education Institutions, research institutions and industry worldwide.
