What are university societies?
University societies are student-run clubs that are catered to individuals with specific interests. There are a wide range of societies on offer for students, whether you are interested in sports, activism and charity, culture, sciences, or the arts; we even offer a quiz society, which has made its way onto University Challenge. Swifties can join the Taylor Swift society, while the gamers out there can discover their new favourite board game as part of the Games society.
If you choose to become a member of a society, you can take part in various events across the year. Sports club members will train and compete against other university teams, those who join arts societies will practice and perform, and all societies will be able to attend club member events and social nights to get to know fellow members better.
How to join your Student Union’s societies
When you arrive at university, the Welcome Week Clubs and Societies Fair is often your first point of call to find out what’s on offer. Each university society will have individual stalls set up so that you can find out more about each one, talk to current society members, and sign up in person.
You can also visit your Student Union website to find a full breakdown of every society, key committee members, contact details and information on how to join the perfect society for you.

Can I start my own society?
Universities have hundreds of societies for you to join, but if you can’t find what you are looking for, you can set up your own. There are certain criteria that a society application must meet before it is accepted, including receiving twenty votes from student peers, and having a committee that consists of a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Health & Safety Officer, Equality & Diversity Officer, and Union Council Rep.
