Further information
Louisiana State University (LSU) is a public institution that was founded in 1853. It is located near the Mississippi River, in the southeast part of the state on a large campus (about 650 acres) close to Baton Rouge. The student population is slightly bigger than UEA and the university has a reputation for excellence. Outside of the classroom, students can check out the unique, free facilities nearby, including the 14-acre Hilltop Arboretum or the Louisiana Museum of Natural History. Sports fans can visit the Andonie Museum, which is also free and all about the history of LSU athletics.
Like UEA, there are loads of student organisations to get involved with so there are plenty of opportunities to pursue hobbies and sports. There are over 350 student organisations currently active at LSU, including a student government and 38 fraternities and sororities. Each Spring there is a Crawfish Boil for campus residents to celebrate and enjoy the traditional Louisiana delicacy.
Louisiana is in the deep south, bordered by Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi. Parts of Louisiana have unique multicultural heritage and influences from Africa, France, Spain and more. The state is, of course, home to the spectacular Mardi Gras celebrations that take place every year. Although the biggest festival is in New Orleans, almost every community in the state has their own party. This is a truly unique cultural experience to have in the Pelican State. Baton Rouge is the state capital and has a growing culinary and craft beer scene, further afield is the chance to explore the epic cities of New Orleans and Houston.
Sustainability at LSU
LSU have several key initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability on campus:
Student Sustainability Fund: Provides grants for student-led sustainability projects, such as pollinator gardens and solar panel installations.
Spring Greening Day: An annual event where students, faculty, and staff work together to beautify and green the campus.
Solar Panels: LSU has installed solar panels to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy.
Living Lab: Uses the campus as a living laboratory for sustainability practices and research.
