Perhaps you’re interested in seeing a lesser known part of Canada, or you want to experience life on an Island in the Atlantic, then MUN could be the destination for you. Memorial University of Newfoundland is the only university on the island and is a similar size to UEA. MUN is located just outside the island’s capital St John’s with some satellite campuses elsewhere on the island.
MUN is home to students from over 115 different countries and prides itself on its public engagement and reputation in the research field.
Given its location and vast coastline, MUN leads the way in ocean research and boasts Canada’s largest Marine Research Facility, but MUN isn’t just all about science. They have plenty of Arts and Humanities courses available. Previous modules on offer include indigenous studies and local folklore.
St John’s has about half the population of Norwich and yet still packs a punch. The city is walkable and lined with colourful buildings. George Street is home to more bars per square foot than any other in North America and attracts craft beer lovers and beyond. (Google Screeching In – a tradition in many of these pubs for non locals) Beyond booze, there are art galleries, music venues and eateries ensuring that there is plenty to enjoy in the city.
Beyond that is where Newfoundland becomes a truly unique destination. Icebergs and whales can be spotted floating gracefully past depending on the time of year and there is miles of coastline to walk. There’s an endless list of outdoor activities to explore; from sea kayaking, viewing the northern lights, visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites, bird watching…. The list goes on.
