UEA is your Student visa sponsor from the time that you submit your visa application until the time that your visa expires. When we give you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), we are confirming to UKVI that we have offered you a place to study at UEA and we wish to act as your visa sponsor. We continue to sponsor you throughout your studies, provided that you comply with the conditions of your visa.
In certain circumstances, UEA is required to withdraw its sponsorship of your visa.
These include:
You fail to register at the beginning of your course
You are required to withdraw from your course (this could be due to academic failure, unsatisfactory attendance or for disciplinary reasons)
You decide to withdraw from your course
You complete your course earlier than the end date stated on your CAS
You defer your studies or take an Interruption to Study
You move to a different immigration category
If UEA is required to withdraw sponsorship of your visa, you will be contacted by our Student Visa Compliance team when this action is taken. If you are not moving to a different immigration category, then the team will advise that you make plans to leave the UK at your earliest, practical opportunity, to protect your immigration status. They will also recommend that you contact Student Life International if you need advice or support.
After UEA has withdrawn sponsorship of your visa, UKVI will take curtailment action. This means that your visa permission will be shortened. UKVI will contact you using the details you provided with your visa application (unless you have updated these since) to advise you that this action has now been taken and what the new end date of your visa is. You will not receive a new BRP with the new end date, so you must keep this letter/email for your records.
We are not able to say when UKVI will contact you to curtail your visa. This is why we advise that you make plans to return home at your earliest, practical opportunity. Staying in the UK after the end date of your visa is called ‘overstaying’ and is illegal. Periods of overstay can impact your ability to gain immigration permission in the UK in the future. UKVI does not inform UEA of your new visa end date.
Once UEA has withdrawn sponsorship of your visa and you have left the UK, you should not attempt to re-enter the UK using the same visa. If you are outside the UK when UEA withdraws sponsorship, you should not attempt to re-enter the UK using your Student visa. If you need to return to the UK to continue your studies at a later date, you will need to apply for new Student visa permission.
