It is important that you always keep your visa and other travel documents safe. Losing them can be costly, both in terms of money and time. If your passport or visa does get lost or stolen, you should ensure that you take the right steps to replace them and inform the relevant people as soon as possible. Student Life International can assist you with reporting and replacing your documents.
Keeping your Visa Safe
If you have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), this is your physical visa document. You should have collected this shortly after arriving in the UK, either from UEA or from your designated Post Office – whatever you selected during your visa application.
If you have a BRP card, we strongly advise you keep your BRP safe in your accommodation and do not carry it around with you in your wallet or bag. You should only need to carry your BRP when travelling in and out of the UK, or when needing to prove your immigration status.
You can take a photograph of your BRP on your phone, rather than carrying your BRP card. There are also alternative Proof of ID documents you can apply for, like the CitizenCard, if you want something to use as proof of age in shops, bars, or clubs.
Losing your Visa or Passport
Before reporting your passport or visa as lost or stolen, please allow 5 working days for it to be handed in. You should check with the UEA Library, UEA Security Lodge, Norfolk Police, and places you have recently visited (such as cafes, event venues, and friends’ accommodation). If you have recently used public transport services (bus, train, or taxi) you should contact them to see if your passport or visa has been found. If you cannot locate your lost or stolen document after 5 working days, please contact Student Life International for support.
In the sections below, we have given some basic information about the actions you will need to take if your passport or visa is lost or stolen, inside or outside the UK. If any of these things happen we strongly recommend that you contact Student Life International so that we can support you to take the necessary steps.
If your document(s) is lost or stolen outside the UK, and it will be some time before you can receive a replacement and return to UEA, you may need to interrupt your studies (take a break from your course). This will mean that you will return to continue your studies later, by agreement with your School. If this might affect you, we can start supporting you with this process as well.
