The Barbers' Company Clinical Nursing Scholarship
The Barbers' Company Clinical Nursing Scholarship enables nurses and midwives making a career in clinical practice to undertake further education. The award is specifically intended for nurses/midwives in, or planning to return to, clinical practice.
The Scholarship is up to £20,000* offered to support fees or subsistence of a registered nurse/midwife undertaking a Masters or PhD programme (relevant to nursing/midwifery) in an academic department in the United Kingdom.
*The amount of funding from the Scholarship is normally divided between several applicants.
The successful candidate(s) will be expected to submit a report on their work achievements at the end of the year in which the Scholarship is awarded and may also be asked to share aspects of their work at a Scholarship Seminar.
Candidates can study at any UK university, not just the University of East Anglia.

Application Process
The annual Clinical Scholarship is open for applications between 2nd December 2024 to 28th February 2025 from qualified nurses and midwives to support their ongoing professional development, such as Masters or Doctoral level. Interviews are held in 27th June 2025, following a rigorous shortlisting process, at Barber-Surgeons’ Hall, London.
There is no application form, instead you will need to submit:
i**) A covering letter**: This needs to include your contact details, date and a sentence outlining your reason for applying.
ii) A short CV: Please provide your employment history and any awards and activities that relate to your clinical nursing/midwifery career.
iii) A 500 word supporting statement: See below.
iv) Course details: Include your course details, the prospectus and costs/invoice.
In your supporting statement please cover whatever you think is important to convey to the Awards Panel. It is helpful if you can provide a clear impression of your motivation for undertaking the chosen course of study, what you anticipate you will achieve as a result, and most importantly, how this will ultimately effect and inform your clinical practice. Include details of how much money you are requesting for what and whether you have an offer of a place on the course chosen. Please also include details of any other funders you have approached and the outcome, if known.
