Dementia: Link to Antidepressants and Bladder Medicines Discovered by UEA Researchers (Research)
Long-term use of some anticholinergic medications are associated with an increased risk of dementia – according to a new study led by the University of East Anglia. Anticholinergic antidepressants have been found to be linked with dementia, even when taken up to 20 years before a diagnosis. Examples of frequently-prescribed anticholinergic antidepressants include Amitriptyline, Dosulepin and Paroxetine. The research, funded by Alzheimer’s Society and published today in the BMJ, also shows a dementia risk associated with medications prescribed for bladder conditions (for example Tolterodine, Oxybutynin and Solifenacin), and Parkinson’s (for example Procyclidine). Patients with concerns should continue taking their medicines until they have consulted their doctor or pharmacist. www.uea.ac.uk
Improving Access to the NHS for All | University of East Anglia (UEA)
UEA research is helping Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and GP practices across England, and internationally, to reduce inequalities by improving access to primary care services for vulnerable groups. Currently most policy initiatives target the whole population, such as seven day opening, however, previous research tells us that targeted services are needed for high risk groups, such as socio-economically disadvantaged groups, those in rural areas and older people. UEA research carried out by Dr John Ford, Prof Andy Jones and Prof Nick Steele explored access to primary care for marginalised groups, and in particular vulnerable older people. This research has formed the basis of a national NHS England resource to reduce inequalities, supported integration of transport and health Norfolk and contributed in service re-design in Ontario, Canada. The patient pathway has been adopted in NHS England’s toolkit “Improving access for all: reducing inequalities in access to general practice”. This helps individual GP practices and CCGs across England to improve access to vulnerable groups. It is also being used by NHS England to support Equality Impact Assessments (EIA) by CCGs. For more information on reducing inequalities and improving access to general practice services, visit: www.uea.ac.uk/GPstudy https://www.england.nhs.uk/gpaccess https://www.england.nhs.uk/equality-hub
