The algebra group at UEA has broad interests, with a concentration in representation theory.
Algebra is the study of structures which appear in different parts of mathematics. As well as the equations and symbols familiar from school, algebra includes group theory, which is the abstract study of symmetry, and its cousin semigroup theory, which studies composable operations.
Representation theory is a way of studying algebraic structures by investigating how they affect other structures: for example, studying abstract symmetries by their action on a physical object. Our research in algebra has close connections to other areas of mathematics, including combinatorics, number theory, geometry, and topology.
