Why you should choose us
Course Overview
This Accounting and Management degree will give you a powerful combination of financial management and creative and communication skills that Management Accountants need to be successful.
Management Accountants need to be numerate of course, but the best are also creative thinkers and good communicators. You will learn how to influence the future of business, develop new ideas and business strategies, cost them, and present them convincingly to your peers and directors.
This is the day-to-day business of the Management Accountant, and it is the breadth of skills involved which so often gives them a fast track to the top of organisations.
If you’re ambitious and love working with numbers as well as people, this degree could well be for you.
This course option also includes a year abroad so you can show employers you’ve got what it takes on the international stage.
On the BSc Accounting and Management degree, you’ll gain the skills essential to working at the centre of a business’s decision-making, influencing its future direction and providing insight that drives a business forward.
Your degree will prepare you for a successful career as a Management Accountant, Management Consultant or Financial Director. You’ll learn the financial accounting skills needed to ask the right questions and collect and interpret the relevant information. You’ll also learn how to effectively present this information to decision-makers, and how to make recommendations and decisions of your own. You will take accountancy and management modules, learning important accountancy skills and management theories. You’ll also have freedom to design your own course, choosing from a wealth of optional modules so you can focus on the areas of management and accountancy that interest you most. For example, strategic management, resource management, HR management, financial accounting, audit, or tax modules.
On this course, you’ll develop your written and presentation skills, becoming a confident, passionate and persuasive communicator who can take complex accounting and management information and present it in a way that’s simple, engaging and clear.
We have a Preferred Partnership arrangement with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) who hold regional meetings, which you are invited to attend. You’ll also be able to join the CIMA Grad Club allowing you to access the most up-to-date management accounting research materials and latest job and internship opportunities.
You will graduate with full examination exemptions from the first two levels of the CIMA qualification. Depending on the modules you choose, you’ll also have the chance to gain exemptions from other professional bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.
Placement Year and Study Abroad
You’ll spend your third year studying at one of our partner universities in Europe, Australia, North America or Asia. This will add an international flavour to your studies, build your contacts, and show future employers that you have what it takes to succeed on an international stage. You’ll return to UEA in the fourth year to finish your degree.
For further details, visit the Study Abroad section of our website.
Accreditations
When you successfully complete this BSc degree you may qualify for some examination exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), depending on your choice of modules.
Study and Modules
Structure
Our BSc undergraduate degrees share a common first year. This structure means you’ll get a broad view of business and can be confident you’re on the right course for you. As you progress through your degree, you will be able to specialise and tailor your studies to the areas that you find most interesting and that are most relevant for your career goals.
Across six fascinating compulsory modules, you’ll explore the essentials of modern business. This will give you an excellent grounding in not just management and accounting, but also business, organisational behaviour, quantitative methods, corporate finance and digital business. By the end of your first year, you won’t just have a firm foundation of your chosen subject, you’ll understand all the key disciplines of business. Throughout your future career, you are likely to work closely with these disciplines, so this understanding is extremely valuable – being able to communicate with and understand other disciplines is a crucial part of management accounting, and should you discover during your first year that your true passion lies with one of these other subjects, you are welcome to change pathways in order to focus on it.
Compulsory Modules
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
Teaching
Throughout your degree, you’ll hone your skills and build your knowledge through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops.
All our teaching is informed by the latest research and real-world business experience. That means that you will benefit from the latest thinking in the industry. Business is ever-changing, so you won’t just learn to understand, evaluate and utilise the current leading theories, you’ll also develop the critical skills needed to examine and put to use any new theories and methods that come to the fore during your career.
Independent study
You’ll also learn through self-directed study – a skill that’s highly prized by employers. Depending on the modules you choose you might undertake IT lab work, working using online resources to practice textbook questions.
You can also choose to enhance your studies by getting involved in the student-led, extracurricular investment and business societies.
Teamwork and communication
During your first year and some of your second- and fourth-year modules, you will work alongside students from other NBS degrees. This will build your teamwork and communication skills, as well as help you gain insight into other business disciplines.
To be a successful Management Accountant, you need more than technical know-how. You need to be able to communicate your findings and ideas to non-specialists and those without an accounting or financial background. Working alongside other NBS students during your degree is a great way to develop this skill. We also attract students from the UK and all over the world, so the relationships you build here will also be great practice if you aspire to an international career, or to working for a multinational company.
Guest speakers
During your time at UEA, you’ll gain unique insights from leading industry figures, including people from the ‘big four’ accounting firms. Our seminar series features guest speakers from the business world, including UEA alumni. In the past we’ve heard from alumni working in both high-level and graduate roles in accounting and management. These seminars are a chance to gain insights into the transition from student to business life, with speakers openly sharing their experiences and advice. These events also provide you with excellent opportunities to connect with businesses, fellow students and staff from across the school.
Employability
Your career is our priority, and employability is embedded in our degrees in all sorts of innovative ways, from guest speakers from industry and projects with real businesses, to accreditations and exemptions from key professional bodies. During our flagship Employability Week each year you can meet potential employers and speak to successful UEA alumni about how they got where they are now.
