Introduction
This module can be taken as a stand-alone module for individual learning and development. Credits from this module can also be put towards the MA in Advanced Social Work. For candidates who do not wish to pursue the full MA it is possible to exit the MA in Advanced Social Work with a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) or a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits). Applications are open to social workers with at least one year’s post-qualifying experience.
This module will enhance practitioners’ and managers’ knowledge of theory and research on child placement practice with children and families. It will be relevant for all areas of work with looked after children and young people, including planning for permanency, fostering, adoption, special guardianship, kinship placements, residential care, and family contact. Issues relating to exploring permanency vie reunification with parents will also be included.
The course will have two taught days, support for developing the summative work, private study and the submission of the assignment. A range of learning materials including recommended reading and relevant online resources will be provided via Blackboard online learning platform.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The module will provide:

A critical understanding of the research evidence base for making decisions around care planning and matching / making placements, and the outcomes of different placement types (reunification, kinship, fostering, special guardianship, adoption, residential care) for children and young people.

An understanding of the application of child development theory to child placement work, with a focus on how children’s needs in relation to attachment, loss, identity and resilience can be met.

Knowledge of research and practice in relation to supporting placements for children and young people of all ages. This will include specific issues such as children’s mental health needs, disability issues, education, and promoting birth family connections.

Links between child placement knowledge and the Social Work England professional standards.
Teaching and Assessment
TEACHING
The teaching days will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about and discuss current law, policy, theory and research alongside application to child placement practice.
ASSESSMENT
Formative: Planning for your presentation to your team
Formative assignment submission date: 24th June 2025, by 3pm on Blackboard
Summative: Presentation PowerPoint, feedback from the team, written reflection on learning
Summative assignment submission date: 12th August 2025 by 3pm on Blackboard
Support for this assignment will be provided by a member of the teaching team.

TEACHING DATES AND VENUES
There are two taught days:
- 6th May 2025 10am-4pm
- 20th May 2025 10am-4pm
These are expected to be on campus at UEA.
