Module Overview / Introduction
Interventional radiology (IR) is a growing area of practice, involving practitioners from a range of disciplinary backgrounds working in partnership to support patients undergoing invasive, radiologically guided procedures. This 20-credit module is offered at level 7 for non-medical practitioners of all disciplines working in IR services and aims to provide comprehensive foundational knowledge, understanding and skills relating to interventions and procedures undertaken within IR and the care of patients undergoing IR procedures, which will be consolidated and advanced in practice. The module is delivered fully online in six blocks of learning over twelve weeks to ensure flexibility and accessibility for IR practitioners working across the United Kingdom and is informed by the Royal College of Radiologists’ Interventional Radiology Speciality Training Curriculum (2021), including paediatric components.
Pre-requisites:
- You will be working in Interventional Radiology as a registered healthcare professional and have completed the internal training for interventional radiology practitioners.
- The module/PGCert is identified by your organisation’s non-medical clinical lead in IR as appropriate in terms of your scope of practice and level of experience and expertise (evidenced in memorandum of understanding submitted with application). Those in a role in which the module learning outcomes are considered by the employing organisation to be aligned to the scope of professional practice (e.g. physiologist, physician associate) are welcome to apply.
- Evidence of completion of Trust-approved IRMER training within the past two years (certificate to be attached to application).
- Those taking the module as a standalone CPD module will demonstrate understanding of clinical assessment and pathophysiology, evidenced through completion of prior appropriate education and training (certificates to be attached to application). For learners with no prior clinical assessment and/or pathophysiology training, educational activities are provided prior to starting the module.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
