Module Overview / Introduction
This module will enable you to conduct a systematic clinical assessment of your patient’s health status and consequently rationalise your decisions. The overarching philosophy of this module is that assessment in advanced practice is about a level of practice, rather than particular pre-set practical skills. The module takes a flexible approach to learning and assessment which enables learners to develop and demonstrate advanced assessment practices specifically relevant to their role. It is therefore suitable for health professionals from most professional backgrounds including nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacists, OPDs, physiotherapist, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and other allied healthcare professionals. It is also suitable for professionals working in a wide range of clinical settings, sectors and specialities, as long as their role includes assessment of patients.

- Critically evaluate the key concepts of enhanced assessment including history taking, examination, clinical reasoning, and the diagnostic process.
- Demonstrate competent and evidence-based focused assessment relevant to your role, setting and scope.
- Critically analyse effective communication skills to aid assessment and support people to make decisions about their care.
- Synthesise information and evidence from multiple sources to inform assessment and make appropriate, evidence-based judgements, diagnoses or recommendations.
- Critically evaluate risks and use evidence, available resources, and creativity to manage risk appropriately.
Teaching & Assessment
6 online study days over 12 weeks
Face to Face skills days
Online study days are a blend of live sessions (including webinars, group work and lecturers) and asynchronous learning activities (including videos, reflective tasks, reading and discussion boards)
An online tripartite meeting with the student, the student's practice assessor and a member of the module team will also need to be arranged within the first few weeks of the module
Independent Study
Assessment:
Individualised Practice Assessment Document: In this you will identify the specific focused assessment skills it would be suitable to develop during this module. Once approved by your practice assessor and the module organiser (within 6 weeks of starting the module), your individualised practice assessment document will form the assessment criteria for the practice-assessed element of your summative assessment
Written Assessment: Through critical analysis and reflection on a case study from practice you will demonstrate how you have met the learning outcomes of this module
Practice Requirements:
Learners must be Registered Health Care Professional who must have access to a Practice Assessor. The practice assessor must be working as an Advanced Practitioner, Specialist Practitioner or equivalent and be identified and confirmed prior to commencing the module. The practice assessor must also have completed the Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor Preparation online course, HCPC Practice Education Course or equivalent. Practice assessor arrangements will vary depending on profession and clinical environment: learners are encouraged to contact the module organiser before applying if they have any queries relating to their individual situation. Support from employing organization is required.
This module includes work-based learning and assessment in practice, in addition to university-based learning. This means you will need to demonstrate some clinical skills in practice and have a suitably qualified colleague assess your competence. They will do this using a Practice Assessment Document which will be provided when you start the module.
Practice-based supervision and assessment is required by a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner who has completed UEA Practice Assessor Training or equivalent.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
