Course Overview
Prepare to be a leader in business with a Master’s designed for the business innovators of tomorrow.
Good management means being able to see problems from every perspective and understanding that there might not always be a single right answer. On this MSc Management course, you’ll study a range of business disciplines and learn to handle such complexities.
You will study the science of management from an evidence-based perspective and discover what works in the field of management and why. You’ll learn to critically analyse existing theories and develop and propose solutions of your own.
This is a research-based Master’s so a background in business is essential. You might be coming straight from undergraduate study, or you may have worked in industry for a time since graduating. Many of our students have worked in - or aspire to go on to work in - their family businesses.
If you are a business graduate and you want to take your studies, and career, to the next level, this is the course for you. You’ll be someone who’s open-minded, intellectually-curious, and a creative thinker. You’ll be ambitious about finding innovative solutions to complex business problems.
To understand how to manage people, you need to understand their point of view and the context they are working in. For this reason you won’t just study management theory and practice, you’ll explore all the key business disciplines, including management, marketing, accounting, finance, operations, logistics, human resources, organisational behaviour, entrepreneurship, business creation and branding. You’ll gain a broad understanding of markets and how and why they work the way they do. You’ll learn from leading academics and practitioners in each field, immersing yourself in all aspects of business, learning something about everything and developing awareness of a diverse range of business issues.
Alongside this you’ll study a broad range of management topics, learning how to critically analyse key theories and techniques.
The broad focus of the course means you’ll graduate with the ability to see challenges from many perspectives. You’ll be able to generalise insights and techniques from one sector to another, as well as across regions, cultures and disciplines. You’ll also be able to see problems from the point of view of the different business areas. As a result you’ll be well placed to be a leader in your field.
Throughout your studies you’ll be encouraged to approach your subject from a global perspective. You’ll benefit from internationally focused course content, and you’ll study with lecturers, researchers and fellow students from all over the world. This means that you’ll graduate ready to thrive in multinational companies and lead international teams.
Once you’ve built a firm foundation during your taught modules, you’ll begin your dissertation. Here you’ll be able to explore a problem of your choosing, with the guidance of an academic adviser. This is a chance not only to tackle an issue you think is important, but also to develop the research and analytical skills you’ll need to keep innovating throughout your career. You’ll learn how to approach issues from a rigorous, scientific perspective and how to analyse complex challenges. You’ll also discover how to make decisions based on evidence and how to use literature and research to solve problems. All of which will be essential in your career.
You might be coming to the course with a particular idea or problem you’d like to investigate. This could be something you’ve identified in your previous studies, or during your time working in industry. For example, you might be interested in exploring the impact of high-performance work systems, outsourcing, and their potential to influence organisational performance. Alternatively, you might be excited about the new areas for inquiry you’ll discover during your taught modules and independent study.
Study and Modules
Structure
You can’t lead a business if you don’t understand all aspects of it. You won’t just study management and organisational behaviour, you’ll also explore financial, accounting, marketing, operations, logistics and human resources, drawing on the many specialisms of Norwich Business School.
In your first semester you’ll take two compulsory modules where you’ll explore the most important theories and practices in business and management.
In your second semester you’ll add further depth and breadth to your studies.
Over your first and second semesters you’ll also learn what research is and discover different techniques for using evidence to drive innovation in management. You’ll explore different qualitative and quantitative techniques, as well as different sources and resources. You’ll learn when best to use which techniques and sources, and how to combine them to create rich, multidimensional research.
In your third and final semester you’ll complete your dissertation, under the guidance of your supervisor. This is a fantastic opportunity to conduct your own original piece of research, exploring a question you are passionate about, and contributing to the latest thinking in the field. Your dissertation is also great preparation for if you wish to progress to PhD study, as well as being a valuable calling card to show employers your potential.
Compulsory Modules
Optional A Modules
(Credits: 40)Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
Over this 12-month intensive course, you’ll be constantly challenged to build your knowledge and hone your skills. You’ll develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills.
You will learn through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, and case studies. You will also learn through a series of tasks and activities specifically designed for you as well as independent study. You’ll learn from lecturers, guest speakers and researchers, from Norwich Business School and the wider university. You’ll also learn from your fellow students, from sharing and defending your ideas and critically analysing the ideas of others.
You’ll become practiced at giving presentations, working effectively in a group, leading groups and working alone. In group work you’ll learn how to solve issues together and how to present findings as a team. By studying alongside other business disciplines you’ll become practiced in the sort of multidisciplinary collaboration that is essential to a successful career.
All our teaching is informed by the latest research and real-world business experience. You’ll be studying with lecturers with international reputations in their fields, and who are recognised worldwide for the quality of their research. That means you benefit from the latest thinking in the industry. Business is ever-changing, so you won’t just learn to understand, evaluate and utilise the leading theories of today, you’ll also develop the critical skills needed to examine and put to use any new theories and methods that come to the fore during your career.
In your dissertation module you’ll conduct your own original piece of research. This allows you to investigate an area of interest, whilst honing your research skills. Developing these skills now means you won’t just graduate with knowledge in your area, you’ll have the ability to investigate and research new areas of interest. And that means you can grow and adapt with the changing business world, now and throughout your career.
Assessment
During the programme your knowledge is assessed using a broad range of assessment methods (e.g. coursework, group projects, and presentations). The choice and number of assessment methods for each module reflects the objectives of the module and the teaching methods employed.
Before each assignment, formative assessments will also take place. These are informal assessments that will not contribute directly to your final marks, but they are designed to give you useful feedback when preparing your assignments.
