Course Overview
In today’s business landscape, data is a key source of value, but only for organisations that can effectively capture, analyse, and leverage it for impactful decision-making.
Our dynamic MSc in Business Analytics equips you with the expertise to manage this entire process, from data acquisition to strategic decision-making.
You’ll explore both the technical and human aspects of data management, while also learning to navigate the legal, regulatory, and ethical challenges of the evolving data economy. You'll gain practical experience through projects that involve working with real business clients and their data.
Our course emphasises the practical application of knowledge through hands-on business analytics projects using real-world data and cutting-edge technology. You’ll gain a solid understanding of business analytics applications while developing a broader critical perspective on data management.
You’ll learn how to encompass the entire data life cycle—from creation and storage to integration, manipulation, and deletion—and the ethical management and use of data in decision-making. This course will prepare you for a wide range of rewarding roles in the field, from management and leadership positions in large businesses to consulting and contracting for organisations of all sizes.
Study and Modules
Structure
Our course offers you the flexibility to develop your career by undertaking a business analytics project that aligns with your goals. You can choose to work on data backed by businesses, research a contemporary global challenge, or explore topics of your own interest, giving you the freedom to tailor your experience to your career aspirations.
In your first semester:
- You'll be introduced to business analytics and learn about key elements of the business analytics process, from problem definition to implementing a solution.
- You’ll learn how AI can be used by businesses and other types of organisations, and how AI is used in the business analytics process.
- And as cyber security increasingly relies upon data, you’ll learn how cyber security threats can be identified and managed.
In your second semester:
- You’ll study advanced business analytics techniques that incorporate Machine Leaning and AI.
- You’ll learn how digital businesses operate to set business analytics in the wider context of the digital economy and the inclusion of technology in business settings.
- And as changes to businesses and other organisations rapidly change as a result of data driven decision making, you’ll be taught business leadership and change management.
In your last semester:
You’ll be involved in a module that enables you to tackle real business or research problems using the knowledge and skills developed in the previous two semesters. You’ll be able to apply the full business analytics process and capitalise upon the latest technology in Machine Learning and AI. You’ll learn research methods specifically for business analytics projects, and how to compose reports for different audiences to professional standards.
Compulsory Modules
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
You’ll learn through a range of methods and approaches – including lectures, seminars and IT labs – but always with a focus on the practical application of your knowledge and skills in real business analytics applications.
As in a business context, you’ll undertake tasks individually and in groups, developing your teamwork and leadership skills. As your confidence in your knowledge and skills grows, you’ll be challenged to think more critically and analytically, developing your ability to solve novel problems and to identify the affordances and limits of standard analytical techniques.
Throughout the course, you’ll be required to reflect on and justify your decisions and choices, developing a professional mindset.
Assessment
Assessment is mainly through coursework assignments and in-class tests. In most assignments, you’ll attempt to solve an authentic business problem for a client, developing a portfolio of analytics work. Each assignment will be completed by a reflection on your experience to identify how you could improve your practice. Each assignment will be supported by formative assessment – assessment for learning – that will give you a chance to test your skills and knowledge, prior to summative assessment – assessment of learning – so you have a chance to improve.
