Course Overview
Want to transform your career by building the skills and creative confidence to make your own digital media? And to gain insight into how digital media is transforming contemporary global culture and communication? If so, MA Digital Media and Global Communication is the course for you.
This course uniquely combines three of UEA's areas of strength. Firstly, you'll gain a cutting-edge understanding of digital media, social media, communication technologies, and their impact on global audiences. Secondly, you'll channel that understanding into creating your own digital media content, mastering the skills needed to make your creative vision a reality. Thirdly, you'll learn how to facilitate communication in international business and management, including in the global media industries. You'll develop a host of communication skills covering everything from content creation in digital media to the ability to ensure positive and fruitful communication in professional, commercial and personal settings. You'll even have the option to take modules from Norwich Business School.
UEA is a globally recognised and pioneering centre for nurturing creativity, and CreativeUEA is one of its flagship themes. This means you'll have the support of renowned tutors, including industry insiders with decades of experience in writing and creating media. Norwich and Norfolk's thriving position in the creative sectors means you'll be able to apply for media-oriented internships and placements, for instance to take part in the running of film festivals. You'll have access to all UEA's specialist digital media facilities, supported by a dedicated team of technicians, to work on your own projects or those commissioned by external organisations.
You'll graduate from this dynamic Master's programme equipped with the tools and skills necessary for success in a diverse range of careers across the creative industries and beyond, including media and journalism, marketing and PR, digital content creation, corporate roles or government positions.

Structure
This flexible course gives you the range of options you need to make it suit your needs and career ambitions.
In your compulsory modules, you'll master key concepts in both digital media and global communication. You'll gain the fundamental practical and research skills in digital media and communication you'll need to work in these areas. These compulsory modules span the whole year.
You can also choose optional modules. Some give you the chance to continue to explore and deepen your understanding of the impact of digital media on users and audiences. Others enable you to put into practice what you've been learning as you create your own digital media content. The option to take modules from Norwich Business School will enhance your career further.
Over the summer, you'll embark on your own individual research project. This kind of project can take many forms, from an academic analysis of an aspect of contemporary media culture to an extended creative project with self-reflection. This can become a calling-card piece as you enter the job market.

Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Teaching and Learning
You'll be part of our vibrant and interdisciplinary School of Media, Language and Communication Studies. You'll benefit from teaching, facilities and expertise from across the entire School. Some of your teachers will be internationally-recognised academic experts on digital media, culture, and communication practices. Others will be staff with backgrounds in industry, ready to bring their insider knowledge and grasp of professional standards to the classroom. If you choose to take a module in Norwich Business School, you'll also benefit from teaching from a mix of academic and industry specialists.
Our state-of-the art BLOC facilities will nurture your digital media skills and creative vision. You'll benefit from our Media Suite, equipped with a digitisation lab, podcasting facilities, editing suites, and cloud-networked computers featuring Adobe Creative Cloud and AVID Media Composer. You can book audio, video and lighting equipment to realise your own projects.
You'll also benefit from visiting speakers and events connected to your course, which provide insight into contemporary digital media and also offer invaluable networking opportunities.
Assessment
You'll write essays as part of your course, and in doing so you'll take your skills in academic writing and argument to graduate level. But you’ll produce a variety of different kinds of assessment over the course. You might find yourself recording podcasts, producing a reflective journal, collaborating on a group project, undertaking client-based work or work defined by an industry brief, individually producing a creative piece of digital media, or writing copy for film festivals or media events. As such, our assessments directly support your career aspirations, giving you real-world oriented experience and enabling you to graduate with a portfolio of skills and sample projects.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):

IELTS: 6.0 overall with minimum 6.0 in Writing and Speaking and 5.5 in Listening and Reading
Test dates should be within 2 years of the course start date.

Fees and Funding
Tuition fees for the Academic Year 2025/26 are:

If you choose to study part-time, the fee per annum will be half the annual fee for that year, or a pro-rata fee for the module credit you are taking (only available for Home students).
We estimate living expenses at £1,136 per month.
