WHAT PHD OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?
We offer two types of PhD degrees in Engineering:

PhD
- 3 years of research followed by up to 1 year to write your thesis.

PhD by Publication
- Awarded based on a collection of peer-reviewed works you’ve already published.
The PhD is available in full-time and part-time formats.

- Propose your own project – Choose a primary supervisor and submit a research proposal.
We recommend contacting one of our academics (see the research group list below) who share your research interests. They’ll assist you in drafting a compelling proposal.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- A UK upper second-class undergraduate honours degree or a master’s degree, or equivalent.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
If English is not your first language or your country is not on the UKVI list of English-speaking countries, you may need to provide proof of proficiency. See this page for more details.
APPLICATION DEADLINES AND START DATES

- Propose your own project: Open year-round.
Start dates: 1 October, 1 February, or 1 June.
FEES AND FUNDING
- Specific projects: May include funding.
- Self-proposed projects: You’ll need to arrange your own funding.
Home/UK students may qualify for a Doctoral Loan.
