WHAT PHYSICS TOPICS CAN I RESEARCH?
We offer a diverse range of research topics in physics, including:
- Astrophysics and Neutron Stars
- Observational Astronomy
- Quantum Computing and Information
- Quantum Fluids
- Quantum Optics
- Superconductivity
If your research interests fall outside these areas, don’t hesitate to contact one of our academics (see the research group list below). We’re open to discussing new ideas and helping design a project tailored to your interests.
WHAT PHD OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?
We offer two PhD pathways in Physics:

PhD
- 3 years of research followed by up to 1 year to write your thesis.

PhD by Publication
- Awarded based on a collection of peer-reviewed works you’ve already published.
The PhD is available in full-time and part-time formats.

- Propose your own project – Choose a supervisor and submit a research proposal.
We recommend reaching out to an academic (see the research group list below) whose interests align with yours. They can guide you in developing a compelling proposal.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- A UK upper second-class undergraduate honours degree or a master’s degree, or equivalent.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
If English is not your first language or your country is not on the UKVI list of English-speaking countries, you may need to provide proof of proficiency. See this page for more details.
APPLICATION DEADLINES AND START DATES

- Propose your own project: Open year-round.
Start dates: 1 October, 1 February, or 1 June.
FEES AND FUNDING
- Specific projects: May include funding.
- Self-proposed projects: You’ll need to arrange your own funding.
Home/UK students may qualify for a Doctoral Loan.
