Introduction
The Clinical Associate in Psychology Masters Apprenticeship (Children and Young People) offers the opportunity for apprentices, who will be psychology graduates, to become skilled Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAP) working in the NHS under the supervision of a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist.
The course aims to develop CAP professionals to be able to undertake assessments to develop and provide evidence based formulations and interventions for clients and staff in Child and Young Peoples services or in Adult services. Both of these routes have current accreditation with the British Psychological Society.
Our well-established CAP programme has excellent completion rates and is now recruiting for its 5th intake in September 2025. The programme builds on the strengths of our highly regarded Clinical Psychology Doctorate, HIT, EMHP and PWP programmes. We will support apprentices as they develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to carry out all the duties of a CAP within their scope of practice. Alongside this we will support supervisors and services as they develop their CAP.
The UEA CAP programme has been developed working with our local service providers across the East of England who act as the employers of all our CAP apprentices. We also enrol CAPs from outside of the East of England region and in particular have close working relationships with providers of child services in and around London. All applications for posts will be through our service partners.
Course Details
All aspects of our programme will be mapped against the new Level 7 Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) (Integrated Degree) Apprenticeship standard. Our programme will also be accredited by the British Psychological Society.
This 18 month programme has been developed to provide teaching and clinical practice across the first year of the course. During this year apprentices will spend roughly half of their time on university lead academic learning including direct teaching, active online learning and dedicated study time. The other half of their first year will be spent undertaking supervised practice within their area of work.
As apprentices enter the final 6 months of the course, they work full time with their employer as they approach an End Point Assessment, which if successfully passed, marks the completion of the course. Apprentices are supported throughout with a close working relationship between the employer, the apprentice and UEA.
The course is split into 5 compulsory modules. The first 4 modules are all worth 40 credits whilst the end point assessment module is worth 20 credits. Module titles are as follows:
- Fundamentals of practice, engagement and assessment
- Evidence based formulation and intervention
- Evidence based practice, research and evaluation to effect change
- Clinical applications
- End point assessment
