Supervisors: Robert Nicholls (ENV)/ Mark Tebboth (DEV)/ Aviden Kent (LAW)
Roland Smith is a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholar at the University of East Anglia as part of the Critical Decade programme. His research focuses on understanding the impact of climate change on patterns of migration and population displacement.
Roland holds an MSc in Climate Change, Development and Policy from University of Sussex / Institute of Development Studies (2020), for which he was awarded a distinction. Following his degree, Roland worked with Fraser Disaster Risk Consulting, undertaking a review of Pacific Small Island Developing States climate change data and projections.
Roland has two decades of experience working in the arts and cultural sector, most notably as Founder and co-Artistic Director of Theatre Deli, a leading arts charity that pioneered new approaches to embedding support for arts and culture – particularly emerging artists and theatre-makers – in commercial business. Roland was also a writer, theatre director, script editor, and cultural festival curator, and was Visiting Lecturer at the National Centre for Circus Arts and Rose Bruford College of Theatre Performance.
What are you most excited about in joining the Critical Decade PhD programme?
Joining the Critical Decade programme is an incredible opportunity to further research into the most urgent challenges posed by the climate crisis by working collaboratively across disciplines. Crucially, this means that we will be able to explore and develop new ways of communicating ideas and discoveries with the wider world, and thereby make a real impact on the policies that shape our global society.
