My name is Maja Anushka and in 2022 I graduated with distinction from the UEA master’s course in Digital and Broadcast Journalism. It was the push I needed to fully realise my ambition to work in local journalism. Within three days, I knew this was the industry in which I wanted to build a career.
After leaving UEA I became an audience insight manager for the biggest titles in the east of England, including the Eastern Daily Press and East Anglian Daily Times, and I love my job. Without the course’s help in securing work experience, I would never have met the people who would eventually hire me to join their team.
“The support and encouragement I got from my lecturers meant I always felt proud of myself, even when things didn't work out as I'd hoped.”
The course, while not always easy, was incredibly fun. The support and encouragement I got from my lecturers meant I always felt proud of myself, even when things didn't work out as I'd hoped. Though the challenges were unfamiliar and at times daunting, with Clare and Julian's help, I managed to push myself beyond what I thought I could achieve.
The confidence I gained from the huge range of projects I worked on meant that by the time I entered the journalism world, I had already tackled many of the situations that were thrown at me. I got to work with radio, video, and written reporting, and practised interviewing, fact-finding, and editing. I was encouraged to follow my interests and my well-being was always a top priority for my lecturers. Anyone considering applying should absolutely go for it. A huge amount of experience and care has gone into the course, resulting in an environment which is perfect for learning and developing as a journalist. Expect to be challenged, meet brilliant people, and create great stories. Journalism can only be learnt by doing, and this is a fantastic way to start.
