Our world-leading researchers work on innovative and interdisciplinary projects that challenge existing histories of media, reveal the influence of media on cultural, environmental, health and social issues, and push the creative and intellectual boundaries of film, television and media studies. 93% of all of our work was graded 4* (‘world-leading’) and 3* (‘internationally excellent’) in the UK’s REF21 exercise.
We are internationally renowned for our research around British Cinema and Television, Feminist Media Studies, and Media & Cultural Consumption; with strengths in scholarship around Media Archives, Digital Humanities, Global Cinemas, Popular Music, and Community Cultures.
Our research is developed in partnership with local, national and international organisations across the worlds of media, culture and politics: from the British Film Institute to Studio Canal, the Science Museum to UNESCO, the East Anglian Film Archive to the Pordenone Film Festival, Britten Pears Arts to the London Jazz Festival and the European Jazz Network.
Much of our research has been funded by prestigious external bodies including the Arts & Humanities Research Council, British Academy, British Film Institute, Leverhulme Trust, the National Archives, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council, and the Wallenberg Foundation. We also work closely with our alumni at a number of academic and industry partners across the world to ensure our research remains relevant to industry and academic audiences.
