Our Maths Employer Advisory Panel draws on the expertise and knowledge of sectors within industry with a history of hiring mathematics graduates.
The aims of the panel are:
To identify the skills and attributes that graduate employers of mathematicians value.
To inform the contents of the relevant degree programs in order to enhance the employability of Mathematics graduates.
To explore opportunities for student engagement with graduate employers, including work experience, placements, and externally-led sessions in the curriculum.
To provide a regular channel of communication between the School and relevant sections of industry.

Nick Ross
Name: Nick Ross

Biography: Nick Graduated from Kent Uni with an Actuarial Science degree in 1991. He started work in 1991 as a graduate trainee in a Life Assurance Company and then moved to a non-Life (GI) insurance company upon qualifying as an actuary in 1996. In 1999 he joined Aviva and has held a number of senior actuarial roles. He has chaired and been members of several Institute of Actuaries working parties.
Area of Expertise: Responsible for Aviva GI actuarial graduate recruitment and involved in accountant graduate recruitment.
Andrew Langworthy
Name: Andrew Langworthy

Biography: Andrew completed his PhD at UEA in mid-2018, and has worked for BT since November 2018. Andrew has worked on various AI-related projects including reinforcement learning in relation to natural language processing, and fairness, ethics, and safety for building AI models.
Area of Expertise: First-hand experience of applying data science and statistical techniques to industry problems, as well as working with multiple graduate students hired into the graduate program at BT.
Ian Mitchell

Biography: Ian is Currently Head of Modelling Integrity in the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, using a Network approach to co-ordinate the Quality Assurance of Models across the Department. This continues integrating capabilities and planning investment for the long term, using enhanced portfolio management techniques for which He was commended. He is a past Mayor and member of Amesbury Town and Salisbury District Councils, and has served as Vice-President, Treasurer and international representative of the Operational Research Society.
Area of Expertise: Business Modelling, Quality Assurance of Models, Multi Criteria Decision Analysis, Systems Thinking and Wargaming.
Kristy Littlewood

Tom Petley

Biography: Tom has worked at Halo Service Solutions since 2014, initially joining the graduate scheme before being promoted to the role of Director in 2020. Before joining Halo, Tom studied Economics at University of Nottingham and now manages the HaloITSM product, which is one of the leading service management software solutions in the world.
Area of Expertise: Tom has first-hand experience of hiring and working with a large number of UEA maths graduates since 2014. Each year a number UEA maths graduates join the Halo graduate scheme and many have gone on to take up leadership positions at the company.

Biography: Tom joined Larking Gowen in 2017, having studied French & Hispanic Studies at the University of Nottingham. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2020, and became an Assistant Manager in 2021. Tom manages a diverse portfolio of clients in both the commercial and not for profit sectors, advising on a range of audit, financial reporting and business tax matters. Tom has been involved with the firm’s recruitment processes for graduates every year since joining, and attends various careers events on behalf of the firm, including at the University of East Anglia.
Area of Expertise: Recent experience transitioning from graduate of a non-accountancy based degree, to a career in accountancy. Involvement in the firm’s recruitment processes.

Biography: Graham has been a UK high school and sixth form maths teacher since September 2001 and has worked at Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form, Norwich since its inception in 2013. He completed the FMSP TFM course in 2013, NPQSL in 2016 and achieved maths SLE status in summer 2017.
He's taught high school and A level maths since 2001 and leads on Mathematics Post-16 for the Angles Maths Hub where he works alongside the AMSP to support teaching of A level maths throughout our region.
Area of Expertise: Beyond A level maths, Graham has significant experience in using Space and Astronomy to teach maths having completed several projects with NASA, ESA & Hubble Space Telescope and runs his own mathematics teaching website.
