Placement Days
Trainee Educational Psychologists (TEPs) must complete a minimum of 300 professional practice placement days during the course. During their three years at UEA, trainees have 310 timetabled placement days:
50 days during Y1;
130 days in Y2; and
130 days in Y3.
Indicative placement days are indicated in the timetables of all year groups with the expectation that trainees keep their placement log up-to-date and signed off by their Placement Supervisor. As part of a TEP’s training, placement supervisors sign off that the trainee has completed the required number of days on placement for the year. In addition, the placement supervisor signs off that the trainee’s Developing Competency Record is an accurate record of their competency against each of the relevant HCPC/BPS Standards. The Competency Record contains Standards from both the ‘HCPC Standards of Proficiency’ and the ‘BPS Standards for the Accreditation of Doctoral Programmes in Educational Psychology’.
Year 1
During Y1, trainees will spend a minimum of 50 days in an Educational Psychology Service and 8 days in a school-based setting (typically, a Primary or Secondary school) during their School Based Placement. The remainder of the trainee’s time will be spent completing University taught sessions, independent study sessions and other activities. The timetable sets out the pattern of indicative placement and UEA teaching days.
Year 2
In Y2 trainees will complete a minimum of 130 days of placement within an EPS. In most cases Y2 and Y3 will be spent in the same EPS. However, it may, from time to time, be necessary for a trainee to spend Y2 and Y3 in different services. In Y2, trainees will also spend 5 days with one allied professional service gaining an in-depth understanding of how that service works, (e.g. service delivery, referral routes, joint work with EPs etc.).
Year 3
In Y3 trainees will undertake a minimum of 130 days of placement within an EPS. This is likely to be in the same EPS as Y2 but may be different. During this time, trainees will focus on completing practice-based tasks (leading to the submission of their Placement Portfolio) and research (leading to the submission of a 25-40,000-word thesis and viva voce exam).
All EPS placement providers must meet the relevant HCPC Standards of Education and Training (SET 5.4, 5.5 and 5.6) and, particularly for Y2/3, agree to work within the Practice Placement Partnership Framework (PPPF).
Placement Supervisors
Placement Supervisors must be registered with the HCPC as practitioner (educational) psychologists; eligible for Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS; and have at least two years’ experience.
How Are Y2 & Y3 Placements Monitored?
During each academic year, three meetings take place between the Trainee, their Placement Supervisor and the University Tutor. At least one of these meetings will be in-person at the host placement. The first three-way meeting should take place early in the Autumn term, with an interim three-way meeting take place in Spring term and a final three-way meeting taking place in the Summer term.
At each three-way meeting, the trainee’s progress against the HCPC and BPS competencies should be discussed. Formative Placement Supervisor and University Tutor observations of the trainee on placement should be used to inform assessment of the Trainee’s progress. As well as an opportunity for celebration of a trainee’s progress, any concerns about a trainee’s progress or fitness to practise must be raised and, where deemed necessary, the university fitness to practise process followed.
