Vice-Chancellor and President - Professor David Maguire

The Vice-Chancellor and President is the principal of the University. He provides academic and administrative leadership to all elements of the institution. He oversees financial security and represents the university regionally, nationally and internationally. He also undertakes certain important ceremonial and civic duties.
Professor David Maguire joined UEA as Vice-Chancellor & President in May 2023. He is the principal administrative and academic officer of the University and de facto chief-executive.
Prof Maguire has more than 25 years’ experience in higher education, having worked at eight universities in the UK and the USA, as well as prominent roles in the public and private sector.
He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich from 2011 to 2019 and Interim Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee in 2020 and at the University of Sussex from 2021-2022. Directly prior to joining UEA David was Interim Principal at the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology.
David has a BSc (Hons) degree in Biology and Geography from the University of Exeter and a PhD from the University of Bristol. His research interests centre on Geographic Information Systems and Higher Education policy. He is the author of over 100 papers and seven books.
He has expertise in strategic planning in large and complex organisations; research, innovation and knowledge exchange; learning and teaching; advanced IT development and commercialisation; and international engagement.
He worked for a global technology company, Esri, for 20 years in the field of Geographic Information Systems and is a former Chair of the Board of Jisc – the UK digital, data and technology agency focused on tertiary education, research and innovation. He was also a member of the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) advisory board and the Universities UK Board.
In his spare time David enjoys squash, walking and guitar music.

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Professor Christine Bovis-Cnossen

Professor Christine Bovis-Cnossen is the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor who joined UEA from Canada.
Prof Bovis-Cnossen leads on strategic, financial, and operational planning of the academic aspects of the University. This will involve the development and delivery of the University’s academic strategy, to maintain and improve UEA’s success as a leading dual intensive research and teaching institution.
With extensive experience in higher education both in the United Kingdom and Canada she was in Canadian universities for nine years from 2012 to 2021 serving as Provost and Vice-President Academic with responsibility for academic and budget priorities.
Her experience also includes 21 years in universities in England and Scotland; latterly holding the role of Dean of Arts, Social Sciences and Management, with corporate responsibility for internationalisation, at Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh. She holds degrees from McMaster University, Wilfred Laurier University, and achieved her PhD in Sociology from the University of Hull. Her PhD thesis and subsequent research included a NATO Research Fellowship focussing on the integration of women into non-traditional roles in the military.
She is a former member of the Scotland Committee of the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission and has pioneered initiatives in equality, diversity, and inclusion in HE in the UK and Canada.
Registrar and University Secretary – Mr Ian Callaghan

As Chief Resource Officer and University Secretary, Ian Callaghan is responsible for the University’s governance, finance and planning, HR, commercial services and health and safety.
He joined UEA in January 2005 as Planning Accountant and held the roles of Director of Planning, Director of Finance, Planning & Governance and Acting Registrar and Secretary before taking on his current position.
Ian graduated from Sheffield University in Geography and has worked in financial and general management roles in various organisations including Barclays Bank, KPMG and Sainsbury’s.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience and Education) – Professor Emma Sutton Pavli

Emma Sutton-Pavli is a Professor of Health Professions Education. In October 2020 she was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience and Education with a strategic responsibility for UEA’s student academic and non-academic experience with a current focus on wellbeing.
Prof Sutton-Pavli began her career as a registered mental health nurse working in specialist areas of crisis intervention and with those who engage in self injury. Despite moving into an academic role more than twenty years ago, she remains a registrant with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and a strong advocate for individuals living with mental ill-health and those that are close to them.
Emma has led the ‘Embedding Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Curriculum’ project at UEA and is currently leading a cross-institution inter-disciplinary project in partnership with the Students Union, to ensure interventions are in place designed to mitigate the impact of the pandemic upon student mental health and wellbeing.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) – Professor Julian Blow

Julian Blow is Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. In this role he aims to enhance and extend the excellence of research at UEA and develop the ways that this has real-world impact outside academia.
Julian joined UEA in 2024 from the University of Dundee, where he had been Dean of the School of Life Sciences. Under his leadership Dundee was ranked the top university for biological sciences research in both REF2014 and REF2021, and was recognised for a range of successful enterprise initiatives in the biosciences.
As Professor of Chromosome Maintenance, Julian is also an active researcher in molecular biology. His research interests span the areas of cell division, chromosome replication and the maintenance of genome integrity. In recognition of his research achievements he has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization. He has served on many national and international scientific committees, including for the BBSRC, CRUK, ERC and NIH. He is currently Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Lister Institute.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) – Professor Steven McGuire

Prior to joining UEA in June 2024, he was Dean of the University of Sussex Business School and a member of the University of Sussex’s Executive Team. He has held previous academic appointments at Aberystwyth University, Audencia Nantes School of Management, the College of Europe and the University of Bath. His research interests are in the areas of international political economy, international business and corporate political activity. His recent papers have been published in Journal of International Business Policy and Management International Review. He has served on the Council of the Chartered Association of Business Schools as well as a Fellow of the UK Trade Policy Observatory.
He hold degrees in politics and international relations from the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto and a doctorate in international political economy from the University of Oxford.
Director of Finance – Mr Jason Brown
As Director of Finance, Jason Brown is responsible for the University’s finances, planning, business intelligence and graduation.
He joined UEA in April 2016 as Head of Financial Planning before taking on his current position in November 2017.
Jason has a degree in Business and gained his professional accounting qualification while in practice, before taking on a number of financial and general management roles in various organisations, including a sessional lecturer role at City College Norwich.
Director of People and Culture – Ms Helen Wiseman
As Director of People and Culture, Helen leads on all people matters and is responsible for the achievement of the University’s strategic aims through its workforce.
Helen started her early HR career working for the NHS; then spent a number of years living and working in Germany for the MOD. Upon returning from overseas she worked as a tutor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), then spent a period of time working in special needs education. Before joining UEA in 2019 she worked as a HR Director for a large veterinary corporate. She is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and also holds a postgraduate qualification in Employment Law which she studied at the UEA.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences) – Professor Charles ffrench-Constant)

Prof Charles ffrench-Constant is the Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 1980 and his research has largely focused on finding therapies for Multiple Sclerosis.
He joins UEA from the University of Edinburgh where he established the Multiple Sclerosis Research Centre, progressing over the next 12 years to Directorships of the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Edinburgh Neuroscience, the Wellcome Trust PhD programme in Translational Neuroscience and Dean of Research for the College of Medicine.
He is committed to educating the next generation of health professionals and during his career has trained numerous students, 13 of whom now run their own labs in Europe and the USA.
Prof ffrench-Constant has lived in Norwich for over 20 years and enjoys sailing, walks with his Norwich Terrier, and is a season ticket holder at Norwich City Football Club.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Social Sciences) - Professor Olga Tregaskis
Professor Olga Tregaskis leads the academic strategy for the Social Sciences Faculty at UEA comprising seven dual intensive teaching and research schools.
Olga joined UEA in 2011, She was appointed Head of UEA’s Norwich Business School 2020-2024 and served as a member of the University’s Senior Leadership Team and Senate. She has held previous appointments at Cranfield School of Management and Leicester Business School. She served on the REF2021 sub-panel for Business & Management and has held numerous journal roles including Associate Editor of Human Relations. A Psychology Graduate from the University of Ulster, Olga went on to develop a research career in International Management specialising in education and skill systems, and management in international firms. With a PhD from Cranfield School of Management and Applied Psychology Masters from the Cranfield College of Aeronautics, Olga’s expertise for applied and interdisciplinary work has led to research collaborations with the ESRC Centre for Climate and Social Transformations (CAST), the NBS Wellbeing Research Group, and the HEC Montréal led International Research Initiative on the Future of Work.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Faculty of Arts and Humanities) - Professor Catherine Richardson

Professor Catherine Richardson began her post as Pro Vice-Chancellor of Arts and Humanities in September 2024, joining UEA from her current role at the University of Kent as Professor of Early Modern Studies, and Director of the Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries. Prof Richardson joined the University of Kent in 2007 from The Shakespeare Institute and during her time there, she took on a range of leadership roles including Director of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Deputy Head and Director of Research for the School of English. From 2017 to 2020, she was Associate Dean for Research and Innovation (Humanities), with responsibility for the REF submission and establishment of Kent’s Signature Research Themes. Her final role as Director of the Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries, which she held since 2019, included setting up the Institute and developing its strategic vision.
Catherine is also Professor of Early Modern Studies, her research focusing on material culture and the history of the creative industries. She works closely with museums and archives on creative heritage projects, recently running a large Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project, ‘The Cultural Lives of the Middling Sort, writing and material culture 1560-1660’, with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Folger Shakespeare Library, Weald and Downland Museum and Portable Antiquities Scheme as partners.
A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Catherine sits on the Council of the Malone Society and, in 2021, took on the role of Governor of the Pasold Research Fund, which promotes and supports research on textile history.
