Bystander Intervention Training empowers people to take an active stand against discrimination across a range of protected characteristics such as gender, sexuality and ethnicity.
Bystander Intervention Training (BiT) has been developed by the Diversity in Medicine group at Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia, led by Dr Joanna Semlyen, EDI Director, Norwich Medical School. The Diversity in Medicine Group is a staff/student collaboration with interventions and research designed to effect change.
The scenarios we use in our Bystander Intervention Training were developed by individuals from a range of backgrounds and provide a powerful representation and realistic portrayal of situations faced in real life by real people.
What is the aim of our Bystander Intervention Training?
The aim of our course is to encourage participants to become active bystanders as opposed to passive bystanders. Our scenarios aim to create a moment whereby the individual actively speaks out on behalf of another person. This skill of being an active bystander is crucial not only for participants’ professional careers but for their continued active allyship within their daily lives.
What does the training cover?
Our Bystander Intervention Training is a role play based training, addressing discrimination across a range of protected characteristics including considerations of homophobia, racism, transphobia and sexism, facilitating considerations of intersectionality too.
Through an exploration of a series of scenarios and role play using film and a comprehensive handbook, our Bystander Intervention Training course creates a safe environment to explore the ideas at hand and teaches trainees how to intervene as an active bystander across a range of settings.
The clip below is taken from our training material.
Our Bystander Intervention Training creates a ‘stepping off the cliff’ moment where attendees will have an opportunity to work in a simulation with an actor. Scenarios can be adapted to any situation. Our team are happy to work with you to devise content appropriate for your context.
Facilitated by experienced trainers, with expertise in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, this training offers a unique opportunity to develop the skills to speak up and effect change.
Who is Bystander Intervention Training for?
