Statement from the Vice-Chancellor on earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

All at UEA are greatly concerned and saddened to hear of the impacts of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria yesterday, and our thoughts are with those affected during this distressing time.

UEA is an international community, and as such we have a number of staff, students and alumni from Turkey and Syria, or who have close ties with Turkish and Syrian communities.

We are proud of the inclusive and welcoming culture on our campus, and I know that our community will show support to those who need it during this challenging time. If any of our staff or students are in any way affected, please be assured that there is support available to you from the University – for more details on this please read below.

Support for students

Please contact Student Services who will be ready to help and offer any advice or guidance – students can request an appointment via their online referral form or self-refer for counselling, via our Talking Therapies Team.

All students also have 24/7 access to Health Assured, which offers support on a whole realm of personal and professional issues that might be affecting your studies, home or work life, health and general wellbeing.

Support for staff

Any staff who are feeling anxious or concerned, can contact Health Assured via the Employee Assistance Programme. This free confidential 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year service is an employee benefit available to you, your spouse/partner and dependent children aged 16 to 24 in full-time education, living in the same household.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to support those who have been affected by the earthquakes can do so via the British Red Cross’ emergency appeal. Staff and students at INTO are also raising funds with INTO Giving, who will top up their total by 25% through their iGive programme. All money received will go to the Save the Children Earthquake Appeal. Donations can be made via their JustGiving page.
