PhD researcher Rachel Tough appointed to UK Young Academy

Rachel Tough, a final-year Doctoral Researcher in the School of Global Development, has been appointed to the UK Young Academy - a network of early career researchers, professionals and innovators partnered with the Royal Society and the British Academy.
The UK Young Academy is part of a growing global network of Young Academies that share knowledge and work on international projects. The activities and work programmes of a Young Academy are determined by its members.
Projects may include providing policy advice to inform national and international policy, public outreach and community engagement initiatives, consultations with key partner organisations, and networking with fellow members and other institutions to share knowledge and expertise across their different areas and address challenges faced by their peers.
There are now over 40 other national young academies around the world and a further eight transnational young academies as part of the global Young Academies initiative.
Rachel said: “For my PhD, I am researching the coronavirus pandemic in Vietnam ethnographically. I was impressed by the proactive steps taken by Vietnam Young Academy Members to raise international awareness of Vietnam’s approach to controlling COVID-19.
“I looked into the UK Young Academy, decided to apply, and am delighted to have been appointed for a five-year term. I hope to use this platform to help increase the impact of ethnographic research in public debates.”

She is one of our most productive and outward facing PhD students, securing nearly £100,000 in grant and impact funding over the course of her PhD in applications that unite UEA themes of Creative and Health with area studies and critical social sciences.”
