The University of East Anglia (UEA) recently hosted a highly successful student-organised conference, 'Healthcare in a Nutshell 2024', showcasing the exceptional talent and initiative of its pharmacy students.
The event, spearheaded by second-year pharmacy student Lana Ahmed Waly, brought together more than 100 attendees, including students, healthcare professionals, and experts from various disciplines.
Lana Ahmed Waly, the driving force behind the conference, expressed her motivation: “I wanted to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world medical practice, and create a platform for multidisciplinary collaboration.”
The conference featured ten distinguished keynote speakers, including Dr Yasmin Karsan, a pharmacist specialising in AI and engineering, and Dr Arthur Joustra, a foundation doctor. Topics ranged from the impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare to the dynamics within multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
Dr James Desborough (UEA Pharmacy Course Director) highlighted the importance of such events: “Conferences like these are crucial for fostering collaboration and innovation in healthcare.”
The event also included a lively panel discussion, a networking lunch, and a quiz competition – all aimed at enhancing the learning experience for attendees. Support from UEA Pharmacy Society, RevisePharma, Pharmaschools, Alendslens, and UEA TV was instrumental in the event's success.

Reflecting on the event, Lana said: “Organising this conference was a dream come true. It was challenging, but the positive feedback from attendees made it all worthwhile.”
The ‘Healthcare in a Nutshell’ conference not only underscored the excellence of UEA's pharmacy programme, but also highlighted the proactive and collaborative spirit of its students.
