The University of East Anglia (UEA) is celebrating a position in the world’s top 100 of a prestigious new international ranking table based on sustainability.
The QS Sustainability Rankings 2023 are the first of their kind, and produced by Quacquarelli Symonds, whose World University Rankings are one of the most well-renowned tables for higher education institutions.
Their Sustainability Rankings ranked nearly 700 universities worldwide on their Social Impact and Environmental Impact, based on factors including how much they shape and influence environmental policies at a national and global level through teaching and research, their proactive engagement in social justice issues within the community and their role in promoting and shaping a more environmentally sustainable world.
UEA placed 97th overall, with a standing of 58th in the Environmental Impact rank. Similar to the Times Higher Education Impact rankings, the QS Sustainability Rankings are based around the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a blueprint for future peace and prosperity for the planet across all UN member states.
Environmental Impact was then broken down into three further categories:
In Sustainable Education, UEA placed 38th, and 7th in the UK, with the University’s strong standing partly based on the world-leading Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research being located on campus and the strong quality and range of courses offered by UEA in environmental sciences.
In the last two years, UEA has committed to improving its social impact by becoming a Civic University, and hosting events across the region for local residents to attend and share their views on UEA’s responsibilities to Norfolk and the surrounding area. In 2020, UEA also committed to its ambition to have over 80% net zero campus emissions by 2030 or earlier (against a 2015 baseline) and 100% net zero by 2045 or earlier.
