Prof Philip Baker is to take up the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
The Faculty has strong links to the Norwich Research Park, comprising the Quadram Institute (QI), the John Innes Centre, the Earlham Institute, The Sainsbury Laboratory and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) NHS Trust.
Prof Baker joins UEA from the University of Leicester where he is currently the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Enterprise.
After training in Nottingham, Cambridge and Pittsburgh, he took the Chairs of Obstetrics in Nottingham and then Manchester. He led both Manchester’s successful bid for an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the Manchester medical school, before moving to head medical faculties and national research centres in Canada, New Zealand and China.
Prof Baker is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, of the Royal Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, in both New Zealand and the UK.
UEA Vice-Chancellor Prof David Maguire said: “I’m delighted that Philip is joining UEA at a really exciting time for our University and a Faculty that is renowned for its outstanding teaching and research and as a crucial driver of skills in our region.
“I’d also like to pay tribute to Prof Charles ffrench-Constant who has done an excellent job as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, including leading the development of a clear research focus around sustaining health, and was instrumental in bringing to UEA the first MRC Impact Accelerator Award.
“Charles progressed the new state-of-the-art anatomy suite that will come on stream at Norwich Research Park in the next years and piloted UEA’s new accelerated new four-year graduate medical course.”
Prof Lesley Dwyer, Chief Executive of the NNUH NHS Foundation Trust said: “Prof Baker brings huge experience and expertise to this role that is crucial for both the University and the wider NHS. I’m sure that he will lead the Faculty with distinction and we are looking forward to working with him to bring a new ambition for the future of university hospitals.”
Prof Philip Baker said: “I’m very much looking forward to working with both UEA colleagues and our NHS partners, and to learn about the opportunities to further enhance our teaching and research endeavours.”
Prof Baker will be joining UEA and starting in his role in February 2025.
