GB’s future sports stars compete at UEA

Athletes from 28 universities will compete at venues across Norwich and the University of East Anglia (UEA) this week in a national competition, hosted at the University for the very first time.
The sporting stars of the future from universities in the midlands will compete in 14 different sports, everything from golf and football, to waterpolo and table tennis at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Conference Cup on 11 March.
Competitions will take place at Sportspark, UEA’s Colney Lane Fields and local community facilities including Eaton Golf Club and Easton Tennis Centre where Universities such as Cambridge, Loughborough and Warwick will be send their finest sports-people.
“After working so hard in training over the season, the whole squad is delighted to have earned a place in the finals of the conference plate! We can't wait for Wednesday to face Birmingham in what we know will be a highly competitive and exciting game!” said Ruth Delay UEA Netball’s second team captain.
The University has seen recent sporting successes, rising over 20 places in BUCS league tables in the last four years and hopes to build on this at this event.
And UEA student teams are competing at a worthy level in regional competitions outside of academia, with UEA’s men’s football team fighting their way to the Norfolk Senior Cup final against Dereham, which will be played at Carrow road later this month.
The majority of the BUCS events will be held at the lottery-funded Sportspark which is celebrating 20 years of serving the community, UEA staff and students. There are a number of events marking this occasion taking place throughout the year.
Phil Steele, UEA’s Director of Sport and Commercial Services said: “This major competition is set to be a brilliant day of sporting excellence and achievement. For most, this will be the pinnacle of their sporting year with the chance to compete against universities who are renowned for their sporting prowess. I am looking forward to welcoming the 28 universities and can’t wait for them to visit and experience UEA. We will also be showing off our fantastic students, many of whom are competing at regional, national and international level.”
UEA is also hoping to inspire even younger sports people, with children from local primary schools attending to find out more about university life and sports.
