We are delighted to announce the publication of ‘Teaching Intellectual Property Law: Strategy and management’, edited by Dr Sabine Jacques and Professor Emerit Ruth Soetendorp.
Integral to the commercial law field, Intellectual Property (IP) knowledge is central to culture, innovation, and enterprise. Looking forward to the new academic norm, Teaching Intellectual Property Law: Strategy and Management uses experience as well as innovative, interactive, practice-based methods for teaching and assessing IP to examine the various ways through which learning is moving forward. In addition to acknowledging the historical journey of IP education, the book focuses on innovative and inclusive pedagogical practices. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for adaptable approaches that cater to diverse learner profiles. Recognising the unique backgrounds, experiences, and learning styles of our students, this book provides new ways to foster collaborative learning environments that promote inclusivity. By embracing a multidisciplinary approach, it intends to enable educators to empower learners to contribute their insights, fostering dynamic and engaging learning experiences for all.
The book was introduced, launched and discussed at the Teaching IP Conference hosted by UCL on Tuesday 21st of June 2023. The contributions of numerous educators and organisations committed to IP education shared practices designed to prepare for the next generations of students.
Through presented papers, interspersed with lively discussion, explored topics including adapting to the challenges posed by COVID-19, championing empirical methods, upholding sustainability, and ethics, responsibly navigating the realm of artificial intelligence, and innovating in assessment techniques. We were thrilled to have esteemed colleagues sharing their experiences, including Professor Uma Suthersanen whose keynote gave a detailed and enthusiastic appraisal of the book. We hope that this event will pave the way for future forums dedicated to addressing these critical issues.
This event was made possible by the generous invitation of Professor Sir Robin Jacob, Lisa Penfold, and Dr. Lynne Chave from UCL's Institute of Brand and Innovation Law, alongside our additional sponsors: Bayes Business School City University, Bournemouth University's Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management, University of East Anglia, the European Intellectual Property Teachers Network, and the UK Intellectual Property Office.
