It appears that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the UK's court system. Prior to the lockdown, the average number of indictments listed for hearing in the Crown Courts was 1543 per day, with 380 of those listed for trial. However, after the lockdown came into force, the number of trials dropped significantly, with courts only hearing cases that were estimated to take 3 days or less. In response to the pandemic, the court system began conducting hearings remotely via telephone and video conferencing platforms. The Coronavirus Act 2020 temporarily expanded provisions for the use of remote technology in criminal proceedings, but jury members were not included in this provision. Court reporting was largely limited to coronavirus-related cases during this time.
