The Gateway to Growth intern pool consisted of graduates from a wide-range of degree disciplines covering marketing, data and creative writing. Meet the Gateway to Growth alumni below and find out a little bit about them, their education, interests and what they are up to now.
Emma Bullen
Emma studied English Literature with Creative Writing at UEA, and filled her time getting involved with the Ballet sports club. Emma successfully transferred her skills and ambitions into the Gateway to Growth scheme and thrived on a number of projects, including social media and website copywriting, graphic design, events organisation and hosting, and project management. Something that Emma particularly enjoyed was planning, recording and editing podcast episodes. Despite having only two interns in the team, Emma and Marcus’ qualities complemented each other well, allowing for many well-executed projects. Having gained a range of valuable professional skills, Emma hopes to start working in broadcast media in production and producing.
Marcus Stearn
Marcus graduated from UEA with a BA in History and MA in Modern History in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Upon finishing university, he was still unsure of the exact career path he wanted to follow, and the eclectic range of projects and responsibilities available within the Gateway to Growth internship presented the perfect opportunity. Marcus was able to massively boost his confidence and develop a real can-do approach to his work. From graphic design, blogs, events organisation, and copywriting, the new skills presented during the G2G internship have been transformative, thanks to the brilliant working dynamic established between Marcus and Emma. Marcus is now looking ahead to a career in journalism. In his free time Marcus will likely be religiously following the Formula One and Liverpool FC, cooking and listening to podcasts.
Sophie Bitten
Sophie graduated from UEA in 2020 with a BSc in Psychology. When off-the-clock, Sophie enjoys baking, photography, reading, and trips to the cinema. Throughout her time at Gateway to Growth, Sophie was able to put her research, analytical and writing skills to good use on several projects. With the help of the internship and her fellow interns, Sophie has broadened her skillset even further by having the opportunity to work on more creative projects. From these opportunities, Sophie was able to develop the skills needed for content creation, graphic design - and even animation! Sophie has secured a temporary position with UEA’s Student Enterprise team and is looking to pursue opportunities in social research in the future.
Zara Krischer
Zara graduated in 2020 with a BSc in Environmental Science. Amid pandemic uncertainty, she has used her time in the Gateway to Growth team to create a portfolio of experiences and build on her existing skillset. Along with honing her analytical and research skills, Zara has discovered her creative side. During various marketing projects, she has found she enjoys creating both written and visual content – such as animations, social media infographics, and blog posts! Zara is also an avid traveller, leading her to secure a scholarship to study Mandarin in Taiwan for 6 months. In her free time, she will be found playing football, watching Netflix, or spending all her money on food.
Eva Leharova
Eva is a PR and Marketing undergraduate and a Digital Journalism postgraduate. Describing her time at the G2G programme as ''an incredible experience'', she says it enabled her to try out many different things she hadn't done before and apply her existing skills to real projects. Being in a team of four was among her favourite things, as bouncing off each other and working on different projects simultaneously was an exciting adventure. Eva's favourite activities include going to museums, walks and watching films.
Alfie Botelho
Alfie’s drive and meticulous ethos made him a valuable asset to the team. As a Business Economics BSc graduate, his background is primarily in data, but he prides himself on applying his multifaceted skillset to overcome challenges across the board. The Gateway to Growth internship has not only allowed him to refine his existing abilities, but also cut his teeth on entirely new projects – such as editing podcasts, minuting meetings and writing surveys.
Philine - BSc Business Management and Marketing
more...Philine is a marketing graduate with a great interest in everything digital and branding. With a big creative side, you can find her spending her free time illustrating any kind of drawings with a soft spot for animals! She is a small business owner with a dedicated digital pet portrait store! Being part of Gateway to Growth has helped find a new path in her career and opened her eyes to the diverse local opportunities. She is currently working at a Norwich based global digital media company, handling multiple projects focused on advertising.
Henry - BA English Literature and Creative Writing
more...Having graduated from English Literature and Creative Writing, during his time at university Henry also involved himself with the Drama Society and the Live Music Society. In a non-pandemic world, he can be seen with his band, Space is Big, or reading poetry in the city's various open mics. The vibrant culture of Norwich is the reason he stayed in the city after graduating. Through Gateway to Growth, he developed his marketing and videography skills. He now uses his writing skills as a digital copywriter for Mesmerise Media. The Gateway to Growth internship has also given him the confidence to start his own business venture, Nozalogue Photo Lab, where he processes film for Norwich's analogue photographers.
Cieran - BA English Literature
more...Cieran graduated in 2018 with a degree in English Literature. Through this, he has grown into a critical and creative thinker with a strong attention to detail. His time at Gateway to Growth allowed him to hone the skills he had accumulated over his degree and put them into practice. He would also gain new experiences through working on projects such as marketing, data analysis and videography. Currently, Cieran has just secured a position as Assistant Project Officer at Norfolk County Council. Outside of work, he mainly enjoys cooking and watching Norwich City FC.
Harry - MMath Master of Mathematics
more...Harry has spent half a decade investing himself in his mutual loves of Maths and Norwich. Among his best skills are data analytics, research, along with networking and outreach. After completing his Master’s degree in Mathematics, he embarked on a journey leading him to Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, where he is now studying Logic and Theory of Science, a philosophical Master’s degree. Harry’s interests include magic, something he’s been doing for more than 7 years, and playing music.
