Postgraduate Research with us
A PhD in Mathematics is a 3–4-year research degree in which you will study at the heart of a diverse and vibrant group of researchers, furthering the development of mathematics and its applications, and deepening your understanding of a subject you are passionate about.
Our staff are engaged in internationally leading research, challenging boundaries and making real advances, and PhD researchers are an integral part of that. We have wide-ranging interest in Mathematics, including the following:
Applied Mathematics
-
Biological and industrial mathematics
-
Environmental mathematics
-
Fluid dynamics
-
Fluid-structure interaction
-
Industrial mathematics
-
Mathematical physics
-
Numerical computing
Pure Mathematics
- Groups and semigroups
- Logic and model theory
- Number theory
- Proof formalization (Lean)
- Representation theory
- Set theory
Statistics
- Data science
- High dimensional statistics
- Statistical inference
See the School’s research pages for details of academic staff in the different research groups, from where you can also read up on their research descriptions/publications.
Working closely with your academic supervisor gives you the support to carry out your own independent research and make your own mark. Doing a PhD will give you the skills to continue to a career in research, in academia or in industry.
Potential students can either apply for a specific advertised project (see the current list of advertised PhD Projects in Mathematics) or apply without a specific project. For the latter, we recommend that you identify at least one member of staff at UEA who might be your supervisor, and that you contact them to express your interest and discuss possible MSc by research projects. They will then help you produce an outline research proposal, which needs to be included in your application, along with the name of the supervisor you are applying to.
You can find out more about doing a PhD with us on the Mathematics web pages. If you are not yet ready to commit to the 3-4 years of study for a PhD, you may be interested instead in studying for an MSc by Research with us instead.
Research Degrees
There are two PhD degrees available:
- PhD
- PhD by Publication
Full- and part-time options are available.
Read more about each of these on our information pages.
Entry Requirements
The minimum academic requirement for entry to a doctoral degree is a UK upper second class undergraduate honours degree or a Master's degree, or equivalent.
Details of the PhD by Publication, including entry requirements, can be found on our information pages.
If English is not your first language or you are from a country that is not on the UKVI list of English speaking countries , you may be required to provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language. Further information on English language requirements can be found on our information pages.
Start Dates, Deadlines, Fees and Funding
The School of Mathematics accepts research students to start on 1 October, 1 February and 1 June. Deadlines for application are listed on our information pages.
Individual PhD projects in Mathematics may or may not have funding attached (see the current list of funded PhD projects in Mathematics).
In all other cases (including when writing your own proposal) you will need to find funding. For UK students, it may be possible to get a doctoral loan from the government.
The full information on fees and funding explains much more about this, including eligibility conditions on funding.
