The main vision and purpose of our research is to improve the health of individuals and of human populations by:
Deepening our understanding of the design of novel pharmaceuticals and formulations
Uncovering molecular level mechanisms of protein-protein and carbohydrate protein interactions paramount in directing novel pathways for treating diseases and understanding cellular mechanism of nutrition
Widening pharmacological tools for studying mechanisms of inflammation, immune resistance and cancer at the molecular level
Understanding cellular mechanisms involved in glaucoma, inflammation, cancer, and mechanisms coupling matrix rigidity to DNA damage in smooth muscle
Discovering new structural motifs of assembly of DNA
Building capacity and strength in research in health policy and patient compliance
The School provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for research that is ultimately directed towards the improvement of human health and patient welfare. This includes the identification and validation of new therapeutic targets, the design of biologically potent molecules, innovative new formulations for their delivery and contributions to education and health policy. Our research cuts across the traditional boundaries and is often multidisciplinary in nature.
Research in Pharmacy is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Medical Research Council, National Institute for Health Research and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council; as well as the European Union. We are funded by charities including the Association for International Cancer Research, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, the Kay Kendall Research Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, Prostate Cancer UK and the Royal Society and receive industrial funding from AstraZeneca, BASF, Colorcon, Evotec, GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Novartis and Rosemont Pharmaceuticals.
