In a world where our actions ripple through time, legacy giving embodies the enduring power of generosity beyond one’s lifetime.
Gifts to UEA empower staff and students with the determination to innovate and ‘do different.’
Today, we're sharing the profound impact of the late Dr Joyce Morris’ generous legacy bequest to UEA’s School of Education and Lifelong Learning. In 2017, the school received an extraordinary £750,000 bequest from Dr Morris' legacy, laying the foundation for pioneering advancements in Early Years literacy research – a transformative contribution to research and learning at UEA.
Dr Joyce Morris OBE was a renowned educationalist and a leading expert in phonics. Her illustrious career included significant contributions to BBC educational television programmes such as Look and Read and Words and Pictures. Dr Morris was one of the three founding members of the UK Reading Association established in 1964 (later renamed UK Literacy Association in 2003), and, in 1996, she became a patron of the Queen’s English Society.
Her generous gift supports Early Years literacy research, addressing social inequalities, promoting literacy, and fostering collaboration, positioning UEA at the forefront of educational innovation. The funds also support interdisciplinary projects on language and literacies, create opportunities for networking and conferences, and encourage collaborative discussions on young children's early literacy development. This helps build research capacity and expertise within the School and beyond, fostering collaboration across disciplines and institutions.
Three major funded projects are now underway, exploring early literacy links with mindfulness, digital literacies, and the literacy practices of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people. These initiatives, led by dedicated researchers, aim to enrich our understanding of Early Years literacy.
The projects, on track for completion by the summer 2025, will be presented at the Joyce Morris Early Years Literacies National Conference at UEA. To be involved or for more information, please email - earlyyears.literacies@uea.ac.uk.
Gifts in wills play a pivotal role in funding impactful initiatives at UEA. These gifts provide individuals from all backgrounds with a meaningful way to make an enduring difference.
Dr Joyce Morris' legacy stands as a beacon, illustrating how individuals can leave a lasting impact on the academic landscape.
