UEA is proud to be among a global network of distinguished organisations chosen as official nominators of The Earthshot Prize 2024. We will be nominating individuals, communities, businesses and organisations whose solutions make the most progress towards achieving the five Earthshots.
Being a Nominator for The Earthshot Prize is recognition of our leadership in the environmental space and contribution to the shared goal to repair the planet. If you have a ready-made solution to an environmental issue, read below to find out how you can share it with us.
Solving the Earth’s greatest problems together
Five, one million-pound prizes are awarded each year of the Earthshot Prize. The five annual winners will be those whose Solutions make the most progress towards five ‘Earthshots' which are: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate – simple but ambitious goals for our planet which if achieved by 2030 will improve life for us all, for generations to come. Each Earthshot is underpinned by scientifically agreed targets including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally recognised measures.
Solutions for The Earthshot Prize should fit within at least one of the five Earthshots and ideally address one, or more, of the 15 priority areas identified below. However, if your solution represents an outstanding wildcard then submission is also encouraged.

2023 Selection Criteria
Solutions will be prioritised that:
- Use technology, AI, or data to enable transformative change.
- Are led and informed by indigenous and local communities.
- Enable policy change.
- Create or leverage nature and carbon markets, novel financial mechanisms and essential legal solutions.
- Promote shared economic opportunity.
- Have potential for global impact by 2030. The solution’s impact to date and potential to make a difference in the future should be articulated based on one or more of the following environmental metrics: 1) hectares of land, ocean or freshwater systems protected or restored, 2) biodiversity increases on land, freshwater systems, or in oceans, 3) reduction in concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5/ PM10), 4) tonnes of waste saved, reduced, recycled or avoided, 5) tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions saved, captured or avoided.
- Are well developed beyond the idea stage and can be scaled or replicated quickly with financial, communications or organisational support. They should have working prototypes, programmes, initiatives, or completed pilots that demonstrate the effectiveness of their solution and already be active in the field or their market with customers, partners or audiences.
- Are mature enough to maximise the support they receive from Earthshot if selected, including 1) having quality leadership with a dedicated team/founder committed to scaling, or replicating, the solution who bring knowledge of the problem it addresses, 2) inclusive leadership - a team that demonstrates inclusivity and represents their community, including female, indigenous and local community led solutions, 3) organisational maturity – with solid governance and financial arrangements, and 4) a credible model of how the solution could be replicated or scaled to have transformative impact.

Nomination Process
Please find our Earthshot Solution submission form below. If you are completing the form on behalf of another person or organisation, please advise them that you are sharing their details with UEA. This is important to comply with appropriate GDPR and data sharing obligations.
A cross-sector panel led by Professor Konstantinos Chalvatzis, ClimateUEA Academic Chair, will meet in the week commencing 13 November 2023 to sift the solutions and decide which best meet the criteria to win an Earthshot Prize. Should we wish to submit your nomination to The Earthshot Prize, we will be in contact.
Those who have not received a response from the ClimateUEA team by 11 December 2023 should assume UEA will not be nominating their solution on this occasion.
If your solution is selected by UEA to nominate to The Earthshot Prize, then please ensure you are available the week commencing Monday 11 December as nominees will be required to be involved in this process.

Submitted Nominations and Nomination Forms are confidential. The screening process and judging panel reviewing Nominations and Nomination Forms are bound by strict confidentiality terms. Nomination ideas and any associated intellectual property used in connection with any Nomination shall remain the property of the party introducing the same. Nothing contained in the Nomination shall constitute the grant of any licence or rights of ownership or any other rights in respect of the intellectual property and confidential information other than for the purpose of submitting and Earthshot Nomination.
